No landmark is as much a visible indication of modern society's dependence upon media broadcasts for information as the Skytree tower in Tokyo, Japan. The tower was built in part as a replacement for the older Tokyo Tower, whose broadcasts have been challenged by interference from surrounding high-rises built after its construction. The Skytree itself is a broadcasting tower for not only the immediate wards of Tokyo city but the greater metropolitan area and even the entirety of the greater Kanto region of Japan itself. Thus it is an excellent example of the constant interchange between the city and the surrounding region, with urban infrastructure impacting life in communities far flung from the city itself.
