Breda has a new railway station, still partly under construction. The station is a huge building and has also offices and apartments. The railway network in The Netherlands is of vital importance for the transportation of many thousands of travelers each day. Most of the trains are electrical. The city of Breda has lots of offices that offer all kinds of services, and many schools that are important for the region. This means that many students, but also teachers and other educational workers are traveling to and from Breda. A school or school building can be seen as a stock of knowledge. There are computers, books, etc. At the same time, the teachers living outside the city have to travel to their workplaces. This is an example of a flow of knowledge, that changes every day. Many of these workers travel by train. The electrical trains can only function because of a electricity network, which produces a constant flow of energy. Without energy, trains can not ride. It would be convenient to have this energy in stock, but trains have no batteries. More than once train traffic is interrupted when there is a problem with the electrical railway network. The flow of students and other workers to and from the station is partly managed by the municipal bus company. This is another part of the 'educational' flow. Furthermore many people are walking and biking through the infrastructure of roads and lanes. Breda is not a typical industrial city, it is a city of services and education. Furthermore the transportation of tourists and visitors is an important issue to be taken care of. These people also come by train, bus, but also by car. Around the city is a network of highways which connects the city with other parts of the country. The railway station demonstrates the complexity of the "stock and flow" interactions of education, energy and the effects of it on the municipal economy. For the new railway station a city district had to be redesigned and partly rebuilt, which underlines the importance of the railway station, i.e. of the flow of main economical components (knowledge). Of course there are more important stocks and flows in the city. Food, drinks, water, consumer goods, industrial components, they all exist in stocks and are part of networks of flow. However, in this task I choose to focus on one of them: knowledge and services in relation to transportation and energy. ![railway Breda][1]![railway Breda][2]!
