This photograph is taken at an intersection opposite to my office in Green Park area of New Delhi, the capital city of India. Various modes of travel like small cars, luxury cars, passenger buses, two wheeler motorcycles & scooters and bicycles can be seen in the picture apart from pedestrians crossing the road. The location of underground Green Park Metro Rail Station can be seen on a white pedestal with faintly visible metro rail insignia in red color near the top of the pedestal. The right bottom corner carries a picture of an ‘auto rickshaw’, a popular mode of transport catering to middle or lower middle income group of commuters. A communications signals tower can also be seen on the top right half of the photograph (between two trees). The photograph shows that every section of the society is equally dependent on the road infrastructure to carry out their daily activities - ranging from the very basic fabric of pursuit of livelihood to carrying out business deals. The users of transportation infrastructure use the same facility irrespective of age, sex, purpose of trip – work, education, business, commercial, recreation, and so on. The richest of the richest or the poorest of poorest is dependent on the same transport and communication facilities and infrastructure. The next urban systems must be designed by incorporating travel desires and changing needs of people so that the sustainable future cities can be created catering to futuristic needs of the residents.
