This is a picture of an old light fixture in Paris (sorry for it being reversed). Electricity lines underground feed this lamp sign allowing for it to work. Before electricity people would go and light candles in every one of them at night !! We very much depend on electricity : without it and without those lamps it would be very dangerous to go out at night (because of thugs, of cars,...). In the future lamp signs will be connected to smart grids and will be able to switch on and off when there is noone or if somebody passes on the sidewalk, leading to more efficient energy use.
