The aqueduct is one of the city's most famous landmarks and is still used for the same purpose it was built for in 1789 - to carry water to the city from nearby springs. The modern day growth of the city is affecting forested regions which help supply the city's aquifer and provide the clean air necessary for the residents of the city.
