I have attached a picture of the port of Barcelona. On the right side of the picture you can see some cruises and beyond them, on the rightest side of the picture, you can see the beginning of the commercial port. On the left side of the picture you can see the world trade center of Barcelona and the W hotel.Already with my short description of the picture you can notice how there is an interesting mix between tourism and business/commerce. Both, touristic and commercial ports have really modified the coast of Barcelona and the surrounding areas in the last century. In order to increase the capability of cruises coming to Barcelona, the city decided to build 7 additional terminals, in collaboration with the biggest cruises companies. Doing that, it was possible to answer the needs of the new ships, looking to the evolution of the sector I add a map of the port form the Port’s official website, where you can see on the right side the area of my picture. The commercial port is one of the most important in the Mediterranean and in Spain, being able to handle and store different kind of products since has the most innovative infrastructures. Barcelona has in the see a really important asset that has also changed the urban development of the city, mainly the coast. It is important to understand that an important port need to be well communicated not only from the maritime side, but also with the hinterland. That means that it is necessary to create highways and railways that obviously affect the city and its structure. It was a challenge for Barcelona combining the port infrastructures with clean beaches for the citizens and tourist. Barcelona has found a good balance between both needs, modernizing the installations of the old port and the creating the Olympic one.
