THe CBD requires a vast array of infrastructure in order to provide the residential and professional working environment of the city. The infrastructure required includes electricity generation, water supply, wastewater removal and transportation to name a few. The CBD provides an example of an environment that requires the support of significant infrastructure that is located outside of the area in which the resources are consumed. For examples the energy consumed in the CBD is generated miles away in the La Trobe Valley primarily utilising coal as the main fuel source. As a person in the water industry, we are particularly interested in not only supplying water and removing the wastewater but also the energy required in this process. Large high-rise buildings require significant energy to pump water to their upper levels. Similar to electricity, water demand is not consistent across the day. Therefore, designing water supply networks must factor in the peak consumption of large residential and office buildings due to their concentration within the CBD.
