The purpose of this mega development plan was to decentralize and decongest Mumbai since the island city had its limits for physical expansion. The idea was to allow this new city to attract the population that otherwise went to Mumbai. Architects: Leading Architects and urban planners were spearheading this ambitious project. Charles Correa was the chief Architect assisted by Execution and Estimation: The new Bombay project was conceptualized in the 1970's and the task of planning and designing was entrusted to CIDCO. This body the 'City and Industrial Development Corporation' was formed on 17th March 1971 The site finalized for the project was located in the eastern trans-harbour of Mumbai. A state governed industrial development area, a few road connections were the assets and link to this hinterland of Mumbai. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust established in 1989, is the largest container handling port located in India. The port was planned to share the load of the Mumbai Port Trust. Results for Failure: The main idea while planning the city was to relocate the seat of the government along with important offices to New Bombay and put a stop to the back-bay reclamation project in the city. The state government went back on this decision and instead managed to withhold CIDCO's work. (The effect this had was one that a temple without a deity would have had.) Since no major government office moved nothing really changed in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai. Current Scenario: Today even though the property rates have gone up in Navi Mumbai other things have not changed much. Commercially the city still needs to grow. People today are considering buying houses in Navi Mumbai only because the road and rail network from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai has improved. Otherwise the city can only be described briefly as industrial and dormitory. The New Mumbai Airport has been in the planning since 1997 and the site for this airport was finally finalized in 2008. The airport was conceived with an intention to reduce the load on Mumbai Airport. But nothing constructive has happened since. Similarities to the Zurich Project: Unfortunately there are no similarities in the Zurich and New Bombay project. Public opinion was not given importance nor was the ecology. Land was acquired from locals (mostly farmers) and then used for the developing the city. ![Navi Mumbai Map][1] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14169357435383546.png
