1. Infrastructure 2. Environment / culture 3. Safety 4. Economy 5. Education 2. Why do we live where we live? Chennai , India . Bullet points : Low Housing and Transport cost variety of Entertainment very good Education moderate Environment low Crime rates and safety Responsible Public services high Healthcare standards Merging Economy Investment proving to be a valuable asset My reasons to live here are as follow: • Cultural : Chennai finds the right balance between Hindu , muslim , Christian cultural traditional element and acceptance of other religions. While Chennai has more spiritual elements than most Indian cities, it is remarkably tolerant of other faiths. The heart of Chennai culture lies in Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple & Triplicane Parthasarathy temple - both centuries old treasures. ![enter image description here][1] • The cost of living is a lower than other Indian cities like Bangalore, Bombay and Delhi, although Hyderabad & Calcutta might be better than Chennai on this. • Environment : surrounded by beaches : ![enter image description here][2] It is not just any beach, it is any extremely massive Marina Beach and among the widest of beaches. This is the heart & soul of Chennai. Pollution levels are lower compared to NCR, Bombay and Calcutta, although some Tier-II cities (such as Chandigarh) are better than Chennai in this regard. • Safety – Among the safest big cities in India. In almost every crime indicator Chennai scores better than other metros. This is especially true in the case of women • Education (universities) :IIT- M , etc many universities on different fields . 3) **To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria?** 1. Job Opportunities ~ 90% 2. Green spaces ~ 80% 3. Good urban transport system ~ 80% 4. Civilization ~ 90% 5. Safety ~ 95% **4. What would you change?** *There are a few more measures Chennai must consider: MAINLY IN RESPONSE TO THE RECENT FLOODS .* 1. The master plan for the city should take into account the drainage system of the city, including rivers, rivulets, other natural drainage channels, ponds and lakes. The problem arises when planners do not respect these natural features, or politicians and builder lobbies force construction on such channels and water bodies. 2. Chennai needs to immediately have a re-look at all the development approvals it has given in the recent past as well as pending approvals to check if they violate the master plan and endanger the hydrology of the city. 3. The bureaucrats, planners and engineers need to stand up to pressure from politicians and builder’s lobby. 4. The municipal body needs to clear drainage channels of encroachments. 5. It is necessary for the Municipal Corporation of Chennai to have a unit that deals with climate change. Again, Surat is the first city to put a “climate change” budget head in its municipal budget. **5. Why do we move?** *Vienna, Austria* Austria’s elegant capital, with its Habsburg-era coffee houses and architecture, palaces, operas and other cultural institutions green spaces high employment low crime rate. comprehensive health care moderate housing costs *Vancouver, Canada* great weather stunning scenery, beauty of it surroundings – the 1001 acres of trees in Stanley Park, limits on urban growth, nature accessible great museums, excellent shopping, dining and nightlife. housing is low to moderate compared with other global *Melbourne, Australia* healthcare, education infrastructure a diverse and multicultural population. thriving cultural scene. water sports restaurants.
