I moved to this city to get access to better college education. After graduating I have stayed in the city for the reasons listed below. **Access to education:** The city has more than 50 institutions offering superior education. **Job opportunities:** The job market in the city, although not the best since construction has suffered a setback in the last years, is better than in other cities of the country. The majority of construction companies are located in the capital city. **Health care facilities:** The majority of the private practices and specialized doctors are located in this city. Most of the time, people from other cities come to Santo Domingo in order to get better medical treatment. **Housing diversity** The house market offers the possibility to live independently to young people that donĀ“t have a family. Outside of Santo Domingo you only find small apartments in the touristic zones. Most of the cities in the country have a housing market targeted towards big families with 5 or more members. **Recreation possibilities** Distrito Nacional is the main recreational city in the country. The majority of public events, urban parks, cultural activities, shopping malls, are in the city. ![Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic][1] **3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria?** 1. Education 60% 2. Safety 30% 3. Health care 70% 4. Transportation 30% 5. Economy 75% General livability score for the city: 50% **4. What would you change?** I would start developing policies towards the improvement of public transportation. One of the main urban problem of this city comes to transportation in both sides: public and private. The lack of reliable public transportation system, the main one is a collective cars system managed by unions, has come to a extend where driving 10 kilometers to work in peak hours takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. The whole system has made the use of private vehicles an obligation which translates into traffic jams during 8-9 of the hours in a working day. An effective public transportation system, offering the opportunity to move more people in less vehicles, is mandatory in order to start improving the quality of the environment which is another major issue. ![Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic][2] **5.
