1. Job Opportunities 2. Safety 3. Environment 4. Education 5. Culture 2) Why do we live where we live I live in Jakarta since I graduated from college. I was born and raised in Yogyakarta, a smaller town but also thriving. The reason I moved to Jakarta was job opportunities, especially the salary and the purchasing power I achieve from working in Jakarta. I also chose Jakarta, because compared relatively to other cities in Indonesia that also offer great economic opportunities, Jakarta is relatively safe. My apartment is located near one of the parliamentary (state senate) housing, so it can be considered a very safe neighborhood. In Jakarta, I also chose to live and work in the southern area of Jakarta, which environmentally much healthier compared to other parts of Jakarta because of its numerous parks and conserved green area. Even though the parks relatively inaccessible and not walkable, they still provide ample green environment to the neighborhood. Even though my hometown, Yogyakarta, is much richer in terms of education access and cultural communities, Jakarta is still able to provide sufficient education and cultural access to its citizen. I myself took my master degree in one of the university in Jakarta while working. ![Jakarta Central District][1] 3) To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria ![Jakarta Livability][2] 4) What would you change If I were the mayor, the first measure I would take to improve livability was improving the environment condition of the city. It is the one criteria in livability that can only be improved by government’s intervention. Environmental improvement in my city can be done through several measures, such as a better waste management, a better walkable environment, a better access to public transportation (to reduce the use of automobile, thus reducing the pollution), and a provision to increase natural landscape area in private properties. 5) Why do we move The three places that I consider to move in: Singapore, Bandung, Tokyo a) I still consider Singapore as the closest location to Jakarta that still offer many job opportunities, especially for people in the design industry like me, at least in terms of international opportunities available in Singapore. It also has a high quality of safety and environment condition as shown by the low level of crime and its accessible and ample parks and public spaces. In term of education and culture, it also has at least the same condition with Jakarta. It has a lot of universities with international reputation. It also has a very diverse cultural demography and protects the freedom of cultural expressions in public realm. b) Bandung is the next local alternative if I have to move out from Jakarta. It provides the same level of job opportunities as Jakarta, especially in the design and creative sectors. It also has a moderate safety condition, even though lower in intensity compared to Jakarta. It has a higher fanatical religious adherents compared to Jakarta, but it still has a safer environment for people to live and express their personal freedom. Bandung advantage higher compared to Jakarta in terms of environment, education, and cultural. It is clearly the center of education as it has the biggest and the most prominent university in Indonesia. It also promotes cultural diversity in public realms. Environmentally, Bandung also scores better than Jakarta because it has more landscape area, it is closer to rural area, and it also has a lower density urban environment. c) Tokyo is another international alternative that I will be interested to move in if not because of the language barrier I have. Its size promises a vast job opportunities. It also ensure a high level of safety that we can observe from the daily activities in every part of its urban neighborhood. It also provides a balanced environment with its parks and playgrounds in almost every communities and neighborhoods in all over the city. Education in Tokyo also ensures a good quality of living through the presence of many international level universities in the city. Even though very homogenous, Tokyo retains its traditional culture attractiveness which combined by the diverse global cultural influence in its public realms which provides a very attractive and comfortable atmosphere to foreigners.
