Livability within a city for me means to breathe fresh air, have clean water sources to ensure a sustainable water supply for the future, walk safely without strident sounds, to buy a house for my family in an accessible zone that allows me to enjoy green spaces, play areas for children and be located near to essential services such as quality educational establishments, health and trade or market places where you don´t have the need to commute long distances and where you can choose between several options for transportation especially the public order, which one must provide greater benefit in terms of security, speed and fluency in the use of transportation. 2. If you need to define livability with the following terms, how would you rank them? (1: most important - 7: least important) ![][1] 3. Choose three cities in the United States (preferable cities in different states) and go to the following webpage: https://livabilityindex.aarp.org. Search for the chosen cities at the livability index. ![][2] 4. Have a look at the livability scores. How high is the livability score of every city? Please note the scores of this question in a table like the one below. The score obtained between these three US cities: Los Angeles, New York and Massachusetts shows that the most livable city is New York with a score of 62/100, second Massachusetts with 56/100 and third place is Los Angeles with 45/100 points. ![][3] 5. How much has the livability score of every city changed? Please note the scores of this question in a table like the one below. ![][4] [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14618142827387835.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14618143491362494.jpg [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1461814401421837.jpg [4]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14618144421605773.jpg 6. Can you explain the change in livability scores of your cities? Shifting the bars according to my ranking and putting the Environment as the most important factor for livability we can see that the scores of the three cities decreased. This happens because in the three cities this factor has a position towards the lower third, as we see in comparison tables developed in the fourth question. The most dramatic decline belongs to the city of Los Angeles down 21 points from his score; second with less than 13 points is New York. This possibly means that public policies enacted for environmental sustainability have no impact, and is not working to improve or protect it. Massachusetts although similarly lowers your score does not drop dramatically: only three points falls. This may be because both Los Angeles and New York are great metropolis and its administration and management is more complicated. Then, it is more likely that in Massachusetts the communities’ actions are aimed at conserving water and air quality, promoting energy efficiency and have contingency plans to deal with natural or climatic phenomena and reduce their vulnerability.
