I usually drive to work, and I do teach. The post office, small restaurants, a farmers market and gas stations are on the way, and not a diversion. The trip is fast, with only sporadic traffic issues. My home is about 120 meters from a public park with walking trails. I can either just walk from my back door or drive down to a parking area by the river, and then walk. I love this arrangement - the majority of my activities are within 20 minutes walk or drive, and the route along the river is very pretty. I avoid the river road when it is icy or heavily raining, or take Route 2 when going to pick up mail or eat out. Every other week, I drive further to a large grocery and go to major shopping centers - about 20 to 25 minutes from the house. Being a townie simplifies my life and makes it easy for me to attend concerts and athletic events. I chose my residence partially because of its access to work and the park.
