Why do we live where we live?** ![enter image description here][1] ![enter image description here][2] ![enter image description here][3] ![enter image description here][4] I am living in Delft, a small city with a charming historical center in the Netherlands. Since 2012, I have been studying at Technical University of Delft as a PhD researcher. The reputation of TU Delft as one of the world’s top universities beside its international education environment were the main reasons for me to choose this city as a living place. Furthermore, the city is amazingly surrounded by a lot of green areas and canals with an easy access to them just by walking or cycling. The streets are divided in parts for cars and bikes so it is very safe. The other point is that you don’t need to speak Dutch to live in here! Unfortunately, bicycle theft is a common problem here but considering the other aspects it’s a safe place to live. - Education - International connectivity - Environment - Infrastructure - Safety **3. To what extend does your own place of residence fulfill your ideal livability criteria?** - Education: (95%) - Culture: (85%) - Climate: (50%) - Environment: (80%) - Safety: (90%) - General livability score: (85%) **4. What would you change?** The biggest challenge in Delft is finding a place to live. The rental prices for accommodation are enormously high. And this is because of high-population density. About one fifth of Delft population are students who are studying at Technical University of Delft. In order to accommodate this large group of students it is necessary to provide them with more housing in areas close to the university campus. Furthermore, many construction projects have remained unfinished since I came to Delft in 2012. For example the construction of tram across the university. The suspended constructions have a negative effect on the aesthetic appearance of city. **5. Why do we move?** Generally, we move in order to improve the quality of our life and to achieve a higher standard of living. Equal human right and freedom are the most important factors for me. After that availability of employment in academia (good university in my field of study), good income (hours of work required to purchase necessities), high-quality health care system, a well-planned city with clean and green public spaces, different forms of urban accessibility (e.g. walkways, biking routs,..) and safety are the most important factors for me. Last but not least for the selection of my ideal city, climate and environment are key factors. Therefore the 3 places that I would like to move in are as following: - Vancouver - South Germany (not sure about the city) - Singapore [1]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14500492114202035.jpg [2]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14500492337464525.jpg [3]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1450049263880969.jpg [4]: https://edxuploads.s3.amazonaws.com/14500492723041179.jpg
