Route 1 Mode of transport Time Distance Car 35 min Total time 35 min Total distance walked 0 m Route 2 Mode of transport Time Distance Walk 10 min 850 m Tube 15 min Walk to connect 5 min 300 m Tube 15 min Walk 5 min 300 m Total time 50 min Total distance walked 1’450 m The two alternatives are clearly different and carry a large diversity in terms of mobility aspects. While Route 1 is shorter it clearly has a more noticeable impact in environment as a consequence as adding myself to the existing car traffic, already quite heavy. However you save time that you can use to staying longer at home with family and to quit your job place earlier to join home or friends, increasing happiness. Route 2 is friendlier in several aspects. You contribute to the measures to combat climate change by using a less polluting transport system, (underground tube, electrically driven); you use a healthier mode as you walk in and out close to 3 km, a great opportunity to exercise as most of it is breathing (quite) pure air; and you have the chance to interact with people that is using your same routing, normally the same people, at the same times and with the same habits. The tube time can be additionally used for activities that one cannot do while driving (i.e. reading newspapers), that ultimately can also save you time for family and friends.
