Here in Belo Horizonte, the public transportation and public security are two of the most serious problems of the city. Not by coincidence, we are encouraged to use cars to do anything. Walking, especially during night is relatively dangerous and the bus fleet is insufficient, which leads to overcrowded vehicles with zero comfort. We practically don’t have subway service (there is only one subway line, and it is of no use to me). Therefore, to go to work, I have basically two options: using car (which is my current option) and take a bus until my neighborhood and walk the rest of the way home. As I said, the bus service is inefficient, so it takes a good time until they stop by, and usually they are so overcrowded that you cannot enter. You literally don’t fit. People are pressed even to the doorsteps. And the trip takes longer then using a car. This added to the fact that walking is not safe and to the high temperatures, which make walking uncomfortable, brings to the only conclusion: we are not evolved enough to rely on public and more sustainable and walkable transportation.
