Disclaimer: image is from www.southafrica.net. I live in Henley on Klip, a peri-urban area with no real near by city and am not able to take a photo for submission. There is the Mandela Bridge connecting Johannesburg to braamfontein. The bridge runs over railway lines (the lines still work). It is night time and all the city lights are on, the bridge has colourful lighing signalling it to be a landmark. There isn't a lot of traffic in the image. The invisible information: The lack of traffic signals that Johannesburg is a work area with little or no residents living there. This area of the city is a public transport hub for people coming into and leaving the city, the evidence for this are the minibuses seen parked in the taxi rank to the left of the bridge. Looking at the amount of buildings with lights on, Johannesburg uses a lot of energy for little or no occupancy at this time of the day. The low night occupancy of joburg and high energy usage could become knowledge for future city planning and help in the design of an integrated working and living city environment. This will bring a vibrant night life to the city, justify the high energy consumption and economic activity in the city. This will also cut down on commuting time to and from the city which will result in improved quality of life for the residents of the city.
