Example 2: Unsafe neighbourhood: I would examine the following questions: Which would be the most convenient routes people could/would want to take? Which routes do they actually take (instead)? Which routes do they avoid? Why do the feel that some of the routes or spaces feel unsafe? What do the residents think could improve these routes or spaces? To involve a reasonable number of residents of all kinds of backgrounds and generate substantial information on the problems and possible solutions from their perspective, I would chose a mixed-method approach: A questionaire, sent to the people. This would also include an invitation to participate in b) Group workshops including what we call in Germany „Stadtteilspaziergang“ - taking walks in the respective areas to be in the immediate setting, which will likely evoke the most substantial answers and ideas. This would be followed up by group discussions. It can also be supported by the photo-voice method, taking pictures of problematic spaces etc. This method also allows for people to participate who might not be fluent in the local language.
