In a neighborhood that is perceived unsafe to walk, I would firstly improve the street lighting as well as propose new developments along the popular paths. Improved public spaces with good lighting, clear visual connection of where the paths lead, options to divert/retreat and signs of habitats and or other passive surveillance will definitely help increase safety for the users. Since the problem is in the evening and at night, lighting is of essential. A grocery store and other public amenities can be placed along these paths to attract more users, and hence additional passive surveillance. During the day, public events can take place at these new and improved public places to further enhance a sense of community and how lively certain spaces can be during the day. Of course, the planning of these spaces and improvements will have to involve participation of the local users. They will not only be informed and assured but also given an academic opportunity to share knowledge, ideas and ways to build their own neighborhood into a safer and more livable environment. We will perform surveys and interview to analyze what safety means to the users, and what elements can make them feel safer.
