The Temperature in the city is on average 2.7 degrees warmer than the surrounding area and can get up to 20 degrees warmer. This extra heating is also causing more pollution in the city. These UHI effects are the result of tall buildings with reflective surfaces and narrow streets between them as seen in the picture. The main measure I would propose to decrease the heat island effect is to begin implementing more green areas - particularly green roofs, that help to reduce the UHI effects.
