There has been an increased use of citizen design science in NYC. For instance, NYC Parks has an initiative that lets citizens report and write to their staff about any issues they might have with the city’s tree like fallen branches that might be dangerous, blocked property from trees, etc. More technological CDS projects have been put in place in some cities that use biosensing and GPS to track valuable design data such as indicators of urban stress. I think it could be interesting to look at the citizen response to the spatial relationship between pedestrians and transportation. For example, the project can start by looking at the health response and perception citizens have on green buffers between sidewalk/street, street corners, forms, etc. Apps for mobile use or digital surveys placed at participatory stores or adding them to existing public infrastructure like bus stations or advertisements can be a means of acquiring this data and interacting with citizens.
