2. I live in Hyderabad, India. Due to rapid urbanisation, the population has been growing for nearly 3% every year for the last 20 years. This has led to demand to high demand for land in the city and lots of unplanned urbanisation. A 2018 study found that, in peak summer, the difference in temperatures at night between the urban core and local surroundings was 7.42C. It generally varies between 7-8C. The extensive urbanisation has led to a decrease in green cover across the city, adding to UHI effects. 3. There are lots of empty plots of land around the city. Can use these to increase green cover and mitigate some effects. Additionally, increased usage of thermal insulated glass, green roofs, particularly in new buildings will help mitigate further effects. 4. Yes. In some commercial areas in the city, the municipal corporation has been trying whitetopping. This helps reduce road maintenance costs in the long run as well reduce the heat absorption. Apart from that, lakes are being extensively identified and protected to maintain open, green spaces across the city.
