- Step 1: List the five most liveable cities that you know, based on your own experience and judgment, placing the most liveable city at the top of the list. This is my ranking based on cities I have visited, my feel about them on some data collected 1- Melbourne (Australia) 2- Vienna (Austria) 3- Sydney (Australia) 4- Geneva (Switzerland) 5- Tokyo (Japan) - Step 2: Describe in your own words five characteristics that according to your opinion make a city liveable. Order them placing the most important at the top of the list. The five characteristics making a city liveable are: 1- Stability (nothing can be if the place is a house of card) 2-Healthcare (to be resilient you need to look after your most valuable resource: people) 3-Culture (the sense of belonging to something special is a great part of happiness) 4-Education (learning as a journey is crucial to evolve and inspire as a united city) 5-Infrastructure (the circuitry or blood stream of a city to make sure things happen efficiently) - Step 3: Describe the status of your own city in terms of the five characteristics that you listed above. Propose how your city should/could be transformed in relation to these characteristics in order to be more sustainable. Singapore is a really stable city-state with a strong politic leader and strict operating rules. The healthcare even though excellent comes with a steep price that not everyone can afford. The culture is in fact a mix of South East Asia due to the origin of the place with a strong influence from the West. The education similar to the healthcare offers good options especially in finance but is also expensive and not equally offered to all social classes. The infrastructure is probably one of the best and most efficient. However visited Changi airport or use the MRT would agree. Singapore has injected a lot of funds and thoughts in its current and future sustainability, involving researchers from all around the world in the collect of information, modelling and simulation of urban designs. Even with limited space, Singapore has kept nature at its core (like in the photo). The key to sustainability will be the city-state ability in keeping the ball rolling and maintaining that direction.
