Singapore architecture offers a mix of modernity and heritage. Shop houses are typically 2-storey buildings with a shop at the ground floor and a house at the first floor. The separating walls were made of clay bricks making a major shift from traditional timber post-and beam frame structures. The roofs are typically covered with clay roof tiles praised for their durability and resistance to fire. In the mid-20th century, facades started to be plastered with pastel colours. In Singapore, the traditional shop houses are built of bricks or tiles and require to have a passage on each side of the street. The architecture was strongly influences by Southern China as many Chinese migrants moved their businesses to shop houses. In the background, you'll notice the more sober Raffles Hospital building cohabiting in the background representative of the 90s architecture.
