UHI is higher in urban areas as opposed to rural areas. This is due to the increased population and hence more buildings are needed to accommodate this housing issue. As opposed to rural areas where the materials used are less absorbent and are dispersed. There is also more greenery surrounding these buildings. In Sydney, the main UHI effects are surface UHI that influence the heat. There is high solar and thermal radiation, due to lack of street vegetation. Initiate more streets greening, green roofs and less parking spots. Make streets less for cars and more for pedestrians. Strategies which are being implemented include conserving large patches of vegetation, increasing vegetation cover across landscape, maintaining green open space, street trees, landscaping, light coloured roofing, water sensitive urban design, street design, reduce energy use and mass transport.
