In the surroundings, local quarries were once used to make bricks. To build and cover the houses, lime mortar was used without cement but mixed with red earth. The dry constructions were made with the interlocking of the stones found while cleaning the land, it was the means to recycle those stones. Building dry stone walls and dry houses was very frequent. With the insertion of cement from Portland and pozzolana from Pozzuoli, the stones were assembled with cement mortar, concrete walls glued with the same mortar and cement-based plaster. Today bricks from local quarries have been enormously replaced by clay bricks, due to thermal insulation. The 0 Km industry is ceasing to exist. I am in the province of Lecce, Leccese stone is enormously produced here, a white malleable but resistant and waterproof stone. Progress is innovating but to the detriment of the economy, sustainability and local resilience. In the photo there is the Leccese stone for the structure with columns and capitals. The stones cover the concrete walls, all assembled with cement mortar.
