This is a traditional house in Karaikkudi, Tamil Nadu, India. Tamil Nadu has a tropical climate. A traditional house in Karaikkudi has an open design with courtyards in the centre, buffer corridors around it, and rooms overlooking the courtyard. This provides good lighting and air circulation inside the building and does not require AC. However, the construction of new buildings in this town follow a very closed design which requires AC and advanced construction materials. Vernacular architecture considering the climatic conditions and availability of local materials should be encouraged when designing the future cities. This not only creates a sustainable living condition but also retains the social and cultural history of the place.
