I live in the outskirts of Budapest. The first image is from the city centre and the second is my direct neighbourhood, still in Budapest. I discovered this rural area during my daily walk of the quarantine period. I am working from home but go for longer hikes after lunch every day and it made me discover hidden treasures around me. These walks made me realize how lucky I am that I can go out and "breathe". People living in the city centre are closed in between walls, and they barely have green areas to go out to. It is obvious that more green surfaces should be integrated into the centre. The urban heat island effect is a grave problem there. According to the measurement of the ELTE University between 2001 and 2010; in most years, the monthly average deviation of the surface temperature in the city center from the suburban average temperature exceeded 6 ° C in some summer months. An overall policy to tackle the problem is lacking. It would be essential to add green surfaces to the city. We are proposing a network of green micro islands with my consortium; Budapest Urban Ideals (https://urbanideals.eu/).
