MODULE 10 - COMPULSORY EXERCISE: Citizen Design Science Guayaquil 1. Think and comment on an existing Citizen Design Science project in urban design and planning from your area or country. In October of this year, Ecuador is going to host the HABITAT III at Quito. Some projects to solve Ecuador housing problems are been analyzed. These are the three projects: • Architecture and Urban Planning for settlements in mangrove ecosystem gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador • Architecture and Urban Planning for settlements in areas of risk in vicinity of volcanic eruption Tungurahua volcano, Ecuador • Architecture and Urban Housing solutions in marginal urban settlements of Guayaquil, Ecuador I think projects and ideas like these offer solutions to punctual problems of different countries, in this case, Ecuador. However, another countries or cities in similar situations can also use the concepts and projects obtain in the conference. 2. Think and comment on the following example: Habitats of a certain neighborhood don’t feel safe when they walk in their neighborhood in the evening and during the night. You are working for the local government and want to solve this problem through improvement of the public spaces. How would you start-up a Citizen Design Science project? Crime and robbery are a socio economic problem. In order to solve it, people need the opportunity to work and earn their own money. In addition, the security of the city or neighborhood needs to improve. With that being said, improvements at public spaces can also be done. Improving the illumination in public spaces would made people feel more safe. Offering group activities at parks would give the citizens a chance to feel like a community and that they can protect each other (because they are not alone). To give the neighborhood population a chance to earn their own money instead of steal to others, using public space to open markets and fairs a few times a month. This way, people can sale food, craft, art or anything else. 3. Imagine that you have set up a project wherein you would like to make use of Citizen Design Science. Which guidelines are important in creating your own Citizen Design Science project? • Include the participation of citizens in the project • Improve public transportation to reduce the traffic and contamination • Promote the use of bicycles as an alternative transport media • Increase the comfort on sidewalks, so people would be encouraged to walk more • Offer well illuminated public areas so people could feel more safe, and also increase the numbers of policemen in the city • Always leave the door open to new ideas and constant information feeding
