Five most livable cities that I have personally experienced are: 1. Canberra, Australia 2. Sydney, Australia 3. Melbourne, Australia 4. Chicago, United States 5. New York,United States The five factors that determine livability, in my opinion, are: 1. Access to clean water, food resources and affordable shelter 2. Safety (level of active and passive surveillance, political regulations and governing laws, average educational level of the city's population) 3. Environmental conditions for living and pollution level. 4. Walkability and quality of public transportation (reliance on cars, pedestrian-friendly connections between residential areas and essential business - groceries, health clinics, schools and employments. 5. Opportunities for personal and professional growth (access to academic institutions, recreational facilities, employment opportunities, outdoor public spaces) I am currently living in Chicago, which has access to clean water, good professional opportunities and world's top ranking academic institutions. However, because of the continental climate type, current political conditions (the right to bear arms), and heavy reliance on cars, Chicago is quite unsafe for walking and to be outside in general. More restrictive gun laws, better designed spaces for pedestrians and bikers in the city, better public transportation outside of central can make Chicago a safer and more connected
