5 characteristics 1-water, power and sanitary infrastructure : These three infrastructure basics, now a days have qualified themselves as basic human rights and have repeatedly become core "targets to be achieved" for international and domestic conventions and bills. most of the time while evaluating and examining functionality of modern cities , particularly in context to cities of global north, these infrastructure measures are taken for granted. i believe if these three amenities are compromised in any way,the resultant will be an insurmountable and devastating effect on city's economic well being and urbanites living standards will plunge dramatically, regardless of their income and social background. 2-public transport is now more then just an infrastructure entity to transport urban folks in the city. it has emerged as a prestigious urban symbol, which give city its very own character while being useful to its economy by mobilizing individuals. in my list above, all cities do have efficient, economical and functional transport system which is matrix-ed according to socio-physical and economic conditions of respective city. 3- exclusion is more dangerous then it is perceived. not just it segregate only neighborhoods or quarters of city but it undermine the functionality of city by converting it into small agglomeration of quarters' which more or less work on their own. 4- public space are refuge for citizens when they want to take a little rest form their routine life along with that being "public" in their very own nature symbolize equal right of every citizen on them thus creating an impression of equality among urbanites. 5- services such as collection of revenues from citizens according to prevailing law or providing security or disseminating information should be punctual and up to date. karachi karachi does not do good on above listed conditions. it has huge problem with water, power and sanitary infrastructure. unfortunately, city of 18 million does not have centralized public transport system. karachi is moving in direction to define it boundaries more clear to rich and poor and limiting spaces for those who "have not". city is in critical need of public spaces and also has to redistribute placement of existing one, karachi does not do good on service delivery either. (suggestions: city should invest more from its budget on basic water and power infrastructure, develop a efficient and modern public transport system by integrating the existing transport infrastructure. adapt a policy against close gated communities and levy taxes on communities that do so, )
