Porto Alegre used to have an important industrial complex in the past, but today is mainly a business and services center to Rio Grande do Sul State and a connection hub among the Mercosur countries. As so, the main stock is human capital and the main flows are workers in and out of the city, as the consumer goods they demand and created in their daily business. However, Porto Alegre already had one of the main ports in the area, which today has barely any use, as almost all cargo in Brazil passed to be transported through roads. A reactivation of alternative (and previous even) transportation modes could increase economical value in the city as to spare resources with fuel.
