My school is located in the suburbs, meaning that despite being in a cul-de-sac – a short drive down a high speed dual carriageway is required. This means that walking is out of the question as it would be too dangerous and long to do on a regular basis. 2 buses run within the local area however due to a high density of educational facilities nearby, a taking the bus can quickly become a very prolonged affair, with delays and full buses leaving passengers at the stop. This reduces the convenience and enjoyment of the commute. When I do get on the bus – it is always cramped (Due to fluctuations in demand that would not warrant a more regular service). South east London suffers with a lack of diversity of transport so leaving early is the only solution (Which is also inconvenient). This is why the optimal method is route 1. It is quick and reliable all year round in the mild British weather. Although there is very little walking involved, there are no parking issues, there is very little traffic and extra time can be used at my leisure to walk around the school and enjoy the morning. The livability and happiness of those reliant on buses is definitely decreased due to constant delays and not enough services. Livability is then further impacted by the pollution and noise produced by the constant flow of private vehicles. Happiness of the private vehicle user remains unaffected however they would find the suburb more livable. The sustainability of the current situation is questionable, with the vast majority of those in the local area reliant on cars. The area is not very walkable and the vast roads are a danger to children, making the area less livable for families. Please see attached image for diagram + time breakdowns.
