Commuting in Ottawa is difficult - during high traffic times commute by vehicle from the suburbs to downtown can take 1-2 hours each way. There is no train system for commuting (passenger rail is for inter-city only). Light rail is currently under construction, and will take years to reach the suburbs (downtown tunnel is currently under construction). There is no tram system. The canal and river are not used for commuting. The bus system is struggling with over-capacity and service cut-backs, in advance of the light-rail system coming on-line. Taxi service is one of the most expensive in the country. Cycling is limited in that the green belt through the city has made cycling to work from the suburbs too far for most adults both in terms of exertion and time to be a viable option, and the number of cycling accidents in the downtown core (even with dedicated bike lanes) is under scrutiny at this time.
