The Journal of Hydrology has noted in 2013 an increase in heat island effects in Ottawa. The urban area varies from the rural surrounding area in that it is urban/suburban vs. farm land and relatively unpopulated green space. Additionally, the green belt within Ottawa separates the center/downtown from the suburbs. The green belt is described at the following wikipedia link (with images): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenbelt_(Ottawa) The green belt may have a measurable heat-attenuating effect, although this does not appear to have been the objective behind it's creation/protection. Green roofs have been used in Ottawa to address UHIs.
