In Calgary, we have snow for 4 months or so of the year, with the average HIGH temperatures only being above 10 Celsius for SEVEN months of the year, and the average LOW temperature only being above 0 Celsius for 5 months of the year. This means that we have to be prepared, when we go to work, to come home in temperatures that may make bicycling, walking, or taking public transit undesirable (https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Canada/Alberta/Places/calgary-temperatures-by-month-average.php). With the days that cold weather or rain/snow are expected, this limits the days that biking and taking the motorcycle are possible options to get to and from work. We are at fairly high elevation, and also very close to the mountain ranges of the rocky mountains, and experience some of the most odd daily weather across the country. Therefore, most travel, personally, is limited by the weather expected for the day. Driving is the most reliable method, as the traffic is quite good and unobstructed on my particular travel route. If I were working downtown (which you can see in the bottom left portion of my photo), I would definitely walk and bike more. But to get to the industrial areas in Calgary, it is most reliable to take a car. The transit system in Calgary is quite bad as well, outside of the downtown core, and very unreliable. When there are major snowfalls in the winter, buses sometimes do not come, and it is not a reliable method to get to work. Route 3 is quite a nice route through a paved and cleared bike trail, and is definitely a great route to take when the weather is known to be acceptable for this method of travel. I also really enjoy taking my motorcycle, but do not like riding my motorcycle in the rain. Travel time is the shortest with my preferred method, and allows me to be flexible with my activities before and after work. I enjoy going to yoga or running or swimming in the morning before work, and if I do so, I need to be able to carry my gear and clothing and shower accessories. Therefore a car is the most convenient to partake in morning activities. Likewise, I often book massage appointments, meetings with friends, and volunteer activities after work. Having a car gives me a reliable method to get to my next place in a short amount of time. It also allows for safe travel after my after-work events, in the dark and is more reliable in the event of unstable weather patterns, which are common in Calgary.
