1. Vienna 2. Vancouver 3. Copenhagen 4. Melbourne 5. London 1. Quality of public spaces 2. Share of sustainable means of transportation 3. Political stability 4. Absence of heavy industries in the city itself 5. Historical background and careful attitude towards heritage sites Kazan, Russia. 1. There was a huge success with building better public spaces recently. It appeared that people actually like to walk. So this point is quite good there, but it shouldn't only public spaces projects but also more every-day-use spaces. 2. About 60% of people travel by automobile. I'd like to see more infrastructure for pedestrians along with strictly separated lines for arterial routes of public transport. 3. In terms of politics Kazan is quite stable. But not democratic enough. Maybe more bottom-up demands and activity could help. 4. There's a lot of industry in the city including the production of chemicals and military stuff. It breaks the city into pieces and adds pollution. A city is no place for these. 5. Heritage is under-evaluated and often destroyed. The laws are good but monitoring services are failing to save heritage, they come too late - we need to improve monitoring and protects from bribes somehow.
