CDS Cycle Ways, Hobart. Cycling is an emerging form of transport in Hobart. If the current population expansion rates sustain, there will be more cyclists and more cars on the roads. Already large delays should be planned for if commuting across or into the city during peak hour. This large amount of traffic and the small amount of infrastructure dedicated to cyclist is likely to create some difficult cycling situations. To truly support cycling as a mode of transport it would be necessary to avoid these sorts of situations, preferably by not allowing them to develop in the first place. Citizens Design Science implemented here could solve these problems and promote well designed and used infrastructure for cyclists. A platform for this to happen on should be able to track the cycling routines of the Citizen Scientist on a map. It should also have discussion panels to post suggestions or complaints, and promote topic related conversation among users. With these tools the platform could be used to inform designers of the most cycled areas; emerging cycling hotspots; dangerous areas to cycle and for what reasons. With this information infrastructure development and cycle flow planning would be very comprehensive.
