The airport Tempelhof is a unique icon of the city of Berlin. It used to be critical infrastructure, particularly during the second world war and the separation of Germany into East and West. Since it ceased its operation in 2008 it has since been transformed into a public space. The Tempelhofer "field", how it is now called, is visited by many Berlin residents and has become a tourist attraction. On the field there are many recreational activities, such as wind sports and an urban garden contributing to the health of the citizens. Tempelhof is a great example for the adaptability of existing infrastructure. It used to contribute to the transportation sector, while it now contributes to the health. Out of important infrastructures, water and energy, are missing nearly entirely on the filed. The "void" of human interference makes it only the more interesting for recreational purposes. While water and energy supply would be curial for buildings on the field, urban development would be difficult. A plan was made by local politicians in 2016, but voted down by residents.
