According to my own prejudice, my top 5 most liveable cities are Vienna, Melbourne, Toronto, Geneva and Copenhagen. Five characteristics I believe make a city liveable are satisfaction with freedom from fear, satisfaction with and accessibility to social services ( health, housing, education, among others), economic stability, political stability and satisfaction with state of physical environment ( both natural and man-made). Accra is the capital city of Ghana, which we all know is a developing country. Thus on a global scale I would not rate Accra as a most liveable city. In terms of freedom from fear, Accra is a peaceful city with levels of crime being on a minimal. Citizens and residents live in peace and harmony. The ease of accessibility to social services however depends on the liquidity of the individual. Most social services are privatised and thus, not affordable to a majority of the populace. The economy of the city is also not as powerful since most goods are imported creating an economic stress and also the rate of unemployment is alarmingly high with most people employed even earning below minimum wage. Political stability however is one area Accra does not fail in. There is absence of wars and civil strife and the political system is renewed every four years by free and fair elections. Lastly, Accra is a beautiful city characterised by beaches, parks, plains to mention a few and there are also a lot of developmental projects going on, enhancing the skyline of the city. In conclusion, the liveability of Accra could be to some individuals high but on a global scale, it does not match to the cities mentioned earlier.
