STEP 1 - FIVE MOST LIVEABLE CITIES i) Melbourne ii) Adelaide iii)Canberra iv) Cape Town v) Dothan, Alabama STEP 2 - CHARACTERISTICS FOR LIVEABILITY i) Fundamental freedoms (freedom of religion, association, speech) ii) Security iii) Economic / political stability iv) Access to nature v) Culture STEP 3 - RATING MY CITY, PIETERMARITZBURG, SOUTH AFRICA 3.1 - Scoring i) Fundamental freedoms (9/10) - There is a high level of freedom, but with some political sensitivities ii) Security (5/10) - The levels of crime are unacceptable in all parts of the city. iii) Economic / Political Stability (3/10) - There are regular riots, truck burnings, even the burning of the university library iv) Access to nature (6/10) There are many green areas, but one must be alert i.t.o security in these areas. v) Culture (8/10) - There is a rich cultural mix, with English, Afrikaner, Zulu and Indian heritages, making for colourful daily interactions with people. 3.2 - Improvements to Liveability Security and political stability are inter-related. Decisive leadership is needed to combat a culture of mindless protests. Improvement of the business environment is required to allow space for economic growth and employment.
