The importation of various goods for most of central Canada runs through the port of Montreal as it is the opening of the St-Lawrence seaway. This creates a large amount of jobs, revenue, and goods to be filtered through the city. As the global economy increases, the amount of goods being shipped also increases which makes the port of Montreal a more valuable stock for the city. Quebec's electricity is created with hydroelectric dams. This allows Quebec to sell the electricity to the public at a lower cost because of the costs of production. The excess flow of electricity is then sold nationally to Ontario or internationally to the United States. As fossil fuels become less and less abundant, the requirement for renewable resources increases giving Quebec more reason to continue producing excess electricity. In any metropolitan city, tourism creates a large flow of people in and out every year. In 2016, Montreal had 10.2 million tourists. The population density around the downtown core increases drastically. With tourism increasing and the port of Montreal accepting cruise ships starting this year, the population density around the city will increase to previously unknown proportions.
