1. Which are the top livability criteria? Having gone through the above mentioned list of criteria for assessing livability in a city and based on my understanding of the term livability, the following are the top 5 criteria (in hierarchical order): a. Economy (As it is the necessary input for any city to function and grow. Stable economy will generate job opportunities and in-turn money which will ensure provision of infrastructure and basic services to all) b. Political Stability (As it is assumed to be a strong indicator of people's satisfaction with quality of life provided by the government and the governance system) c. Infrastructure (As I understand, includes basic necessary services provided to the people as are essential for city to function, like Housing, Sanitation, Public Transportation, , Healthcare, Electricity etc) d. Safety (It is important that people feel safe and secure in city environment) e. Environment (It can refer to nature, green spaces, landscape, lack of pollution and induced healthy living) 2. Why I live in Delhi? I have been staying in Delhi-India for a larger part of my life. As a kid, I reasoned my stay in Delhi with both my parents having a job in Delhi and my school and later college. With years, the list of reasons has become long. The reasons why I still continue to live in Delhi are: a. Job opportunities b. City Social Infrastructure that primarily includes Education Infrastructure ( Schools and Universities), Healthcare facilities, etc. c. City Physical Infrastructure like transportation - road, rail, air connectivity, Electricity, Water supply, etc. d. Environment (I stay in South Delhi which has a lot of planned greens and forest cover. The area is calm, pleasant and equally beautiful to stay) e. Connectivity to shops-markets, schools, offices, parks, etc is pretty much walkable or approachable through various modes of public transport. This adds to the comfort of living in the city. This observation is drawn after having lived in Bangalore which struggles with unplanned growth and poor connectivity within city. 3. Livability Scale a.Economy (Variety of economic activities, Job Opportunities, Per capita income, etc) 80 Reason : Job Opportunities in multiple fields, highest per capita income in India. b.Political Stability (Law and Order, etc) 75 Reason : Minor issues relating country capital and achieving complete statehood. c.Infrastructure (Physical Infrastructure,Social Infrastructure) 60 Reason : Infrastructure shortage- gap between planning and growth. Problem of unplanned- village areas now part of city. lack of affordable housing. d.Safety 50 e.Environment (Greenery, Public realm, Walkability, etc) 80 Reason: Delhi is among the greenest capitals in the world and in India. It caters to diverse cultural groups. Total Score 69 4. What would I change? With the opportunity to improve livability in Delhi I would first like to provide the city with the required and necessary infrastructure needs like sanitation (better sewage systems, solid-waste management, and storm-water systems) followed by measure that can be taken to make the city safe and secure for all. These are the two areas were Delhi is lacking behind and unable to cope with. 5. Where can I move? If I consider relocating to a new place I would like to go to: a. Toronto Reasons: Economy and Job opportunities, Infrastructure, Environment (Apart from cities in India, I have only visited Toronto to cite as an example for this question)
