FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"

The photo shows Rua da Glória, a street in the neighborhood of Boa Vista, in the city of Recife, Brazil. Considering the image, the visible information is the historic houses. The street is considered, by the municipal laws of Recife, a "local" street, which means the street is calm, with a higher amount of habitation. Also, we can see that these historic houses are damaged by weather and lack of revitalization. The two invisible pieces of information are the data of the historic houses and the problems of mobilization in consequence of the sidewalks and the privilege of cars. These houses are archived in the city hall with information containing photos, plan, façade, and sections. With this (invisible) information, professionals can act in the area with the knowledge of its historical significance. This can avoid negative actions such as the construction of high buildings — considering the neighborhood's typology and infrastructure. Thus, the appreciation of bigger sidewalks, revitalization of the abandoned houses, the prevention of gentrification and the respect for the pedestrian can make positive changes in the local through conscientious planning for more livable urban areas.
