In this image taken in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa one of the fast developing areas in the city you can see a number of stocks and flows: The three most important being: Capital,People,Density This area is an excellent example of the stocks and flows of capital in a city and South Africa is prone to being guided by developers, vis a vis capital flow. It changes the stock of once open spaces in the city. The second stock and flow relates to people. Due to unemployment there is migration of people from rural areas as well as from bordering countries. Resulting in a massive influx of people working in these new areas of economic opportunity. Unfortunately however, the concept of stock and flow is not taken into consideration specifically when thought is given to public transportation planning which results in large informal taxi areas. The third is density and the change it brings about in the character of an area as a flow. In the future hopefully more care will be taken when planning new urban areas and considerations for the stock and flow of cities will bring about more considerate decisions to policy makers and those who approve development.
