MODULE 4 - COMPULSORY EXERCISE: HEAT ISLAND EFFECT 1. Check the temperature differences in US cities I looked at Seattle which can be up to 17 degrees hotter than surrounding rural areas with an average of around 4 degrees. 2. Which are the main UHI effects that you can identify in your area? In central Auckland today (21 August 2016) the actual temperature is 14 degrees Celsius, whereas a nearby regional park (Hunua) the temperature is 13.4 degrees Celsius. Attached are two photos of Auckland central and one of Hunua. The reasons that contribute to the UHI effect are the roads and buildings. 3. Which are the measures you would propose? Measures that I would propose in order to reduce it and provide a more livable environment would be: • Require buildings to be orientated to maximise solar permeability to reduce dependency on air conditioning. • Require a percentage of lots to be landscaped, the percentage would be relevant to the land use zoning. a • Reduce dependency on cars and put money into efficient public transport rather than building more roads. 014. Is UHI effect concerning policy making in your area? I am not aware of UHI effect concerning policy making in Auckland. The focus of policy is more on climate change and use of renewable energy sources.
