2.The UHI of the city of Toronto has been growing as the city has begun to grow to a point where the Greater Toronto area has taken over some of the surrounding smaller cities as part of the metropolitan region. Although the urban heat island is definitely a phenomenon in the city, some studies have shown the the effect is more pervasive in the suburbs around the city compared to main core where there is actually generally more vegetation. The suburbs tended to have more pavement and asphalt over larger areas whereas the city core has focused on maintaining the green canopy to fight UHI effects. 3.I would like to look into how to increase the urban tree canopy throughout the city beyond the current green roof bylaw (see answer 4). I believe increasing the vegetation in urban parks throughout the city, especially in the suburbs beyond the greenbelt. 4.The city of Toronto put a bylaw in place for any new developments after 2009 stating that they must include green roofs. According to the 13th Annual Green Roof Industry Survey, in 2016 the city of Toronto was actually recognized as having the most green roofs in North America.
