2. The UHI for Nairobi is not as drastic as many cities in developed nations due to the low concentration of buildings. Nairobi is a high altitude city, this lowers the temperature significantly at night creating a comfortable environment. As the city develops the UHI will most likely increase due to densification of neighbourhoods and vegetation removal. Statistically the UHI is between .5C and 3.5C based on research published by the University of Nairobi. The picture is of downtown Nairobi (Central Business District), after the 1980s many businesses left the CBD and this lead to office clusters around the city versus in one area, this disbursement may have led to the lower UHI. Also Nairobi is located near rivers, streams and swampy land versus some of the desert like surrounding areas which may reduce the UHI. 3. The city could do more to protect it’s existing green space and pass bylaws mandating some green space in new developments. At the moment most sites are paved completely for parking lots and new buildings. 4. The UHI is interesting but city has many other issues to solve first due to extreme poverty.
