The route I have scetched out is the route from my home to the Kongsberg campus of the university college I attend. I only walk, so this is of theoretical interest only. The image shows two different routes; one consisting of both walking and driving, while the other one is only walking. Times and distances are show in the tables at the bottom of the picture. Judging the alternative routes: - Route 1, Driving * Traffic: Rush our on this section of road is terrible because the majority of commuters to the industrial estates drives the same road. With little traffic the drive would take 3-5 minutes, but in rush hour it can take more than one hour. * Environment: Not good at all. Due to elevation differences, type of car and normal traffic I would struggle to do much better than 16mpg. * Happiness: No. * Safety: Good. * Cost: High! Fuel consumption of about 16mpg + parking. * Other: Its really not good for either the car or the environment with such short drives and cold starts. During fall and winter seasons a lot of time and effort would be required to shuffle snow and/or scrape ice from the car windows. - Route 2, Walking * Travel time: Within what is acceptable with appropriate clothing. * Safety: Good, only a few zebra crossings. * Environment: No pollution or other negative influences. * Cost: Practically free. * Other: Great health benefit except on days with bad congestion, and it kind of sucks when it rains horizontally or is minus 30 degrees C.
