FC-01x Future Cities (Self-Paced) - Exercise 1 : "Making the Invisible - Visible"
Uploaded on 2018-04-07 by Alžbeta Laurincová
This picture was taken during late lunch on a work day, it is raining so it is not so busy as normally. The visible information is that that there are shops and services on both sides of the street. The surface is divided into driving road and pedestrian paths by level change and curbs. Outstanding feature is the concrete lion blocks. There are temporary traffic signs saying "construction traffic". What invisible information can we get from the visible facts I noticed? The road is separated from the pedestrian lanes on the sides but it is used as shared space, no crossings, people using the whole width of the street. The lions slow down occasional traffic, cyclists too. They also serve as possible resting bench. It makes people to stop, changing the character of the space. From the image we can assume this street is turned into shared space from normal road. How can this be used in future planning? Gotgatan in Stockholm is an example of traffic road turned into a shared space, we can learn how visual elements representing this character work.
